The Navy Taught Me This About Hard Days: Just Get There

In the Navy, there's a concept that got drilled into me during the hardest days of training: just get there. Not "be perfect." Not "enjoy every second of it." Just get there. Show up. Put one foot in front of the other until you're where you need to be. It sounds almost too simple, but I've found that this mindset is the single most transferable skill from military service to civilian wellness.

The Myth of Motivation

Here's what the wellness industry gets wrong: they sell motivation. They sell the idea that you should feel inspired to take care of yourself. That you need the right playlist, the right gear, the perfect morning routine. But anyone who's served knows that motivation is unreliable. Some mornings you wake up and you don't want to do anything. Your body hurts. Your mind is heavy. The idea of a "wellness routine" feels laughable. On those days, motivation is useless. Discipline โ€” the habit of just showing up โ€” is what gets you through.

Applying "Just Get There" to Wellness

When I started rebuilding my health after the Navy, I didn't overhaul everything at once. I just tried to get there โ€” wherever "there" was for that day. Some days, "there" was a 30-minute walk. Other days, it was just taking my supplements and drinking enough water. On the worst days, "there" was getting out of bed and sitting on the porch for ten minutes. The point wasn't perfection. The point was not letting a bad day turn into a bad week, then a bad month, then a bad year.

Small Wins Compound

What I've learned โ€” both from service and from building Shanti's Lounge โ€” is that small, consistent actions compound over time in ways that feel impossible when you're in the middle of them. You don't notice the change day to day. But three months of "just getting there" looks radically different from three months of waiting for motivation to strike. Whether it's incorporating CBD into your evening routine, committing to five minutes of breathing exercises, or just choosing water over soda โ€” the small stuff matters more than the big dramatic overhauls.

You Don't Have to Do It Alone

The other thing the military teaches you is that you don't go it alone. You lean on your team. That's why we built Shanti's Lounge to be more than a store โ€” it's a space where you can ask questions, learn at your own pace, and be around people who understand that the path to wellness isn't always pretty. If you're having a hard day, just get here. We'll figure out the rest together.
